Vivi, Confused The next day, Vivi is out and about the town when he comes across two young kids. As he makes to approach them, they run away and hide. Vivi is saddened...

Later, while Vivi is gazing at the windmill, hearing a funny "kweh" coming from inside it, Zidane shows up. After a brief talk, in which Zidane teases Vivi about girls, he tells Vivi to head back to the inn. But when he leaves, someone sneaks up behind Vivi and grabs him.

When Vivi doesn't return, Dagger and Zidane become worried and decide to search for him. They go to the place Zidane last saw him — in front of the windmill — and hear someone crying... Zidane asks through a pipe in the ground if it's Vivi, and it is. He tells the black mage to sit tight while he and Dagger find a way to save him.

Zidane and Dagger discover a manhole in the windmill, and when they head downstairs, they overhear two townspeople in a small shed talking about some strange stuff. When they come out, Vivi is with them. Zidane makes to beat their asses, but Dagger holds him back, and they watch as Vivi is lead into another room and packed into a box. Dagger tells Zidane that the boxes are from Alexandria, and asks him to not be too hasty. He agrees, as long as Vivi isn't in immediate danger.

After the men leave, Zidane and Dagger unpack Vivi from the box, and he tells them he was so confused and frightened that he could only keep silent. Zidane berates him lightly, telling him to call them scumbags the next time something like this happens. He asks if Vivi can continue on, and Vivi says he wants to find out more, too.

Up ahead, a strange machine with nothing less than Mist pouring out of it is producing eggs by the dozens. They carry on...and discover something completely shocking: the eggs are hatching into what appears to be replicas of Vivi himself! Vivi, shaking, wonders if they're dolls, while Dagger is flabbergasted that her mother is behind something like this.

Suddenly, they hear someone coming, and in a rush they jump on the conveyor belt. Boxed up, they're sent along the conveyor line with the rest of the Vivi clones. Some time later, Zidane is poked in the rear by Steiner, who'd come across their suspicious barrel and used his sword to figure out what was inside. The three pop out of the barrel, Vivi visibly upset, but not much talking is done before Black Waltz No. 2 attacks.

After defeating them, Dagger is even more concerned about what her mother's up to, while Vivi is struggling with the similarities between himself, the dolls and the Black Waltzes. He asks Zidane if he looks like the dolls, and Zidane assures him he doesn't.

The group boards the aircraft, and Vivi takes a spot on the ship's balcony, overlooking the ground far below. Zidane asks him how he's doing, and he answers:

quote Vivi § Feels like I'm going to be sucked into the sky... quote

Vivi is the first to enter the ship, and is quite startled by what he sees: the workers are the dolls! When he tries to talk to them, they ignore him, again and again.

Zidane heads up to turn the ship around, but as he does so, the third Black Waltz appears. Out on the deck, the Black Waltz carelessly dispels of one of the works right in front of Garnet and Vivi. The other workers crowd around Vivi, protecting him. But the Black Waltz is the strongest of them all, and demonstrates his power by destroying not only those workers, but the ones in the barrels. Vivi watches in horror as their limp bodies fall to the ground far below.

Vivi yells in anger and charges at the Black Waltz. He confronts him, asking him whether or not the dolls had been the Black Waltz's friends. The Black Waltz calls him a fool, that the dolls are only mass-produced lowly soldiers. Steiner, Zidane and Vivi attack while Dagger steers the ship, and the last Black Waltz is defeated.

Even so, the Black Waltz manages to commandeer tweedle-dumb and tweedle-dee's airship and set it on a course of collision with the carrier craft. Dagger maneuvers the craft as best she can, but Black Waltz No. 3 managers to catch up. Looking at one of the doll's hats clinging to the side of the ship deck, Vivi watches as the wind catches it up and throws it into the valley below. He turns, magic at the ready, and knocks a punch into the Black Waltz's aircraft.

Tuckered out, he falls to the ground, and Zidane runs out to make sure he doesn't fall off. A daring and narrow escape through the rapidly closing South Gate later finds them safely bound for Lindblum.

quote Vivi § Zidane...those black mages...and I...are we the same? quote

Zidane doesn't know how to answer, and neither does Dagger...but Steiner, of all people, does! He tells Vivi that it doesn't matter if he's the same as the other black mages, and Zidane agrees, claiming Vivi is an individual above all else. To cheer him up, Zidane motions for him to run out on the deck as they approach Lindblum, an amazing and inspiring sight to see.
