Freya
Vivi's friendship with Freya Crescent fluctuates dramatically over the course of the game. Starting out as comfortable allies, Freya begins to question Vivi's connection to the black mages and, later, his resolve in discovering the truth of his existence. In a way, Freya becomes Vivi's external conscience.
At the beginning, seeing him as but another one of Zidane's friends, Freya doesn't seem to care either way about Vivi. She isn't distant, but she isn't interested, either. It's not until she's alerted that Burmecia is under attack by black mages — which Vivi clearly is — that she places any sort of importance on Vivi.
But even as they approach Burmecia and see the massacre that happened there, Freya manages to keep herself in check. Though she questions Vivi, almost insinuating he should know more about the black mages, seeing as he is one, she doesn't lash out at the little mage where someone else might have.
As they near the Burmecian royal castle, Freya talks of her fears of seeing what lies ahead. She's almost ready to stop right there, afraid to go on. But Zidane and Vivi both insist she must. Vivi tells her he's not about to back down in finding the truth about the black mages, and himself. But Freya sees Vivi as a naive child, not in the least prepared for what he's about to discover.
Freya § Do you really know what you're doing? The answer you seek may forever change
your life for the worse.
Vivi seems caught off guard, and his fears begin to shine through, just for a moment — but after stumbling over his words, he insists he must find out who he is, especially if it means he's not even human. Freya seems both touched and saddened by his response. But with his words, she resolves to continue on in spite of her fears.
Freya questioning him brings about a change in Vivi himself: instead of doubting himself, Vivi's self-questioning becomes a process less built on fear than on a true longing for certainty. From this point onward, when Vivi questions his reality, his direction and his decisions, he's looking for a stable truth to work with. In a way, Freya has enabled his superego — his conscience — which gives Vivi yet one more tool at his disposal on the path to self-discovery.
